It’s 11 p.m., and Sarah’s back hurts. She doesn’t call a clinic. She asks ChatGPT, checks reviews on three different sites and, by morning, she’s booked an appointment. The question for clinic owners is: with whom?
That scenario opened Panel Marketing’s recent live webinar, Stop Marketing Like It’s 2022, presented by founder and CEO Saqib Tariq. Saqib has spoken at industry events including the Canadian Chiropractic Association and Curiosity in Conversations. Here’s a recap of what’s changing in healthcare patient acquisition, and three rules your clinic can start using this month.

What’s Changed in Healthcare Patient Acquisition
Patients are paying more and choosing more carefully. Half of Canadians planned to cut back on spending,1 so every booking decision gets more thought.
AI has also become the front door to your clinic. 46% of Canadians used AI for health advice in the past year, yet only 27% trust it to give accurate health information 2. Patients use AI to shortlist, then check reviews, websites and social media for proof they can trust. Use of AI for local recommendations jumped from 6% to 45% in a single year.3
Rule 1: Look Like No One Else in Your City
College advertising rules limit what clinics can say, and they should be respected. But there are still many ways to stand apart: your location, your story, your team and the way you deliver care.
Start with your website, because that’s often where the final decision happens. In one A/B test, swapping a stock photo for a real one lifted conversions by 161%,4 and 54% of people visit a business’s website after reading positive reviews.3
What to do this month:
- Replace stock or AI-generated photos with photos of your real team and space.
- Lead with what only you offer, not a generic service list. AI tools already know the basics. They’re looking for what makes your clinic specific.
Rule 2: Show Up Everywhere Patients Look
AI tools pull from many sources, including your Google Business Profile, social media and online directories. When AI summaries appear in search results, organic clicks drop from 15% to 8%.5 You want your clinic’s information to be what those summaries draw from.
What to do this month:
- Claim and update every listing with consistent information, not just Google.
- Run search engine optimization and Google Ads together. Google Ads remain a reliable source of high-intent traffic, while SEO builds visibility across search and AI tools.
Reviews matter, too. 47% of consumers won’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.3 Where your college permits it, ask patients for reviews and reply to each one. Some regulated professions, including mental health, face stricter limits, so check with your college first.
Rule 3: Build Care Around the Long-Term Patient
5.9 million Canadian adults have no regular family doctor or nurse practitioner,6 and 72% of Canadians tried to improve their health in the past year, rising to 84% of Gen Z.7 Patients increasingly want a proactive partner in their health, not a one-off treatment.
What to do this month:
- Make booking easy with online booking, reminders and fast new-patient spots.
- Offer care plans built around each patient’s goals, not a single symptom.
Saqib sees a better patient experience as one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways for a clinic to grow.

Where Your Marketing Budget Is Leaking
Advertising costs keep rising. The average cost per lead across industries hit $70.11 in 2025, and 29% of Google Ads accounts recorded zero conversions in 90 days.8 As Saqib put it, spending isn’t the problem. Measuring is.
Run these four checks every month:
- Compare new and returning patients. Are you growing, or replacing patients who quietly don’t come back?
- Track cost per new patient by source, and cut what doesn’t pay.
- Check bookings by practitioner. Who is full, and who needs promoting?
- Tie marketing spend to revenue, not clicks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should my clinic spend on marketing?
A percentage of revenue is a common starting point, but your growth goals matter just as much. Knowing your target cost per new patient lets you work backwards to a budget.
Should my clinic be on every social media platform?
Claim your profile everywhere so your information stays consistent, then focus on the one or two platforms where your patients spend their time.
How do I know if Google Ads are bringing in new patients?
Compare Google Ads conversions against new patient bookings in your EMR. With consistent tracking, you can estimate your return on ad spend with confidence.
Does writing for AI make healthcare marketing less human?
No. AI tools favour specific content written for real people. Write for your patients first, with enough detail that AI recognizes your clinic as a knowledgeable source.
Final Thoughts
The rules for attracting new patients have changed. Stand out, show up everywhere patients look, build long-term relationships and measure everything every month.
